Modern Ferraris use automated gearboxes and electronic aids that lower some traditional skill barriers.

Sharp throttle mapping and strong brakes demand progressive right-foot technique and practiced modulation.

A short cockpit familiarisation and a quiet-practice checklist significantly reduce first-drive difficulty.

What it means to drive a Ferrari today

To understand what it takes to drive a Ferrari in 2026, think about two overlapping experiences: everyday road use and focused, high-performance driving. Modern Ferraris are engineered to be usable on public roads while also being capable on a closed course, and that dual purpose shapes how they behave for a first-time driver.

Most current Ferraris ship with automated gearboxes and a suite of driving aids designed to help drivers manage power and grip, and the company’s own programs recommend staged, instructor-led familiarisation for new owners to build confidence with the car’s systems and dynamics, which is particularly useful if you plan to drive at the car’s performance envelope Ferrari Driving Experience.

The cultural image of ‘‘driving a Ferrari’’ often stresses speed and drama, but practical operation is about learning a few different habits: gentle low-speed technique, alert positioning to protect ground clearance, and an adapted right-foot approach for throttle and brake inputs. These are skills that most drivers can learn with brief, focused practice.

The phrase drive a Ferrari describes both that cultural thrill and the concrete act of operating a modern performance car; approaching the idea with a checklist and short training steps turns an intimidating first drive into a manageable learning session, or browse MPH's Ferrari listings.

How modern Ferraris differ from classic manual-era models

One of the biggest changes since the gated-manual era is the near-universal move to automated or dual-clutch transmissions, which removes much of the clutch-foot skill required in classic Ferraris and lets drivers focus more on steering, throttle and brake control. This shift means many first-time drivers will not need to operate a clutch during normal driving, though some limited-run models remain manual by design Smart Guide - Ferrari Roma.

Alongside transmission changes, electronic aids such as traction control and anti-lock braking systems help stabilise handling in everyday and performance contexts. Those systems alter the skill set required: instead of relying solely on clutch and rev-matching skill, drivers must learn to trust but verify electronic interventions and adapt inputs so the systems can be effective when needed.

For drivers familiar with mainstream automatics, dual-clutch behaviour will feel different in low-speed situations and during sporty downshifts; the mechanical and software choices Ferrari makes aim to preserve responsiveness and driver engagement while reducing the gross difficulty of operating the car compared with a manual-gated transmission.

Cockpit layout and controls: what feels different

Ferrari cockpits are organised around driving focus. Expect a higher dash line, a tightly arranged instrument cluster and many primary controls on or near the steering wheel, including paddle shifters and drive-mode selectors. That layout concentrates essential functions where your hands naturally rest during spirited driving, which is beneficial once you are comfortable with the arrangement Smart Guide - Ferrari Roma.

Seat position and pedal spacing can also be noticeably different from mainstream cars. Pedals are positioned for performance driving and throttle and brake response are often much sharper, so spend time setting the seat, mirror positions and steering column before you move the car.

Before a first drive, a short static familiarisation session-adjusting seat, mirrors and steering, locating the paddles and primary switches, and confirming pedal feel-reduces surprises and helps you build intuitive control without pressure.

Gearboxes and low-speed control: dual-clutch behaviour

Dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs) used by most modern Ferraris split the gearbox work between two clutches to allow near-instant shifts and direct throttle response. At low speeds this design can produce a different feel than a torque-converter automatic, including a tendency to be less forgiving of abrupt throttle inputs when pulling away from standstill How dual-clutch transmissions work, and community discussions describe similar sensitivity in everyday driving owner reports.

Practical technique to avoid lurching starts centers on two simple habits. First, use minimal, progressive throttle when moving from a stop and let the transmission and electronics manage gear changes; second, when reversing or manoeuvring, use short, measured throttle inputs and trust parking sensors and cameras but verify sightlines manually.

Recent Ferrari models commonly provide reversing cameras and parking sensors that reduce low-speed risk, but those aids complement careful throttle modulation and slow approach speeds rather than replace them.

How Ferraris feel on throttle and brakes

Professional reviews of recent Ferraris consistently describe very sharp throttle mapping and strong, immediate braking that reward precision and punish abrupt inputs, so new drivers should prioritise learning progressive right-foot technique before attempting spirited driving Car and Driver first-drive review, and a detailed GTspirit review covers related calibration and control philosophy GTspirit review.

Brake performance is typically powerful and predictable when applied progressively, but initial pedal travel and bite can surprise those used to softer commuter cars. Practising measured brake modulation and building muscle memory for progressive pressure makes city stops and parking much more controlled.

Keep speeds under 10 mph for drills

Two practical exercises are particularly effective: gentle throttle blips while rolling at walking speed to learn throttle sensitivity, and progressive braking drills where you practice bringing the car to a stop using gradually increasing pedal pressure. Repeating those exercises in a quiet lot builds predictable inputs you can carry into traffic or an instructor session.

Low-speed manoeuvres, visibility and ground clearance

Ferraris often have a low ride height and noticeable front and rear overhangs, which makes approach angles, curbs and ramps places where a cautious line and slow speed are essential. Limited rear visibility also increases the chance of misjudging obstacles at low speed, so plan movements carefully before you commit to a turn or park Smart Guide - Ferrari Roma.

While reversing cameras and sensors are common and helpful, they are not a substitute for a walk-around check and an awareness of low clearance points. Use cameras as a second check and always confirm sightlines before crossing curbs or ramps.

Three straightforward steps to reduce risk are: approach potential contact zones slowly, pick a line that keeps most of the car away from curbs or steep ramps, and, if possible, have a spotter guide you on tight manoeuvres. These habits protect the car and reduce stress for the driver.

Readiness checklist: what to do before your first drive

1. Confirm the transmission type so you know whether to expect a clutch pedal or paddle-only operation. 2. Adjust seating, steering and mirrors until you can comfortably reach the paddles and pedals. 3. Walk the car to check tyre condition and obvious body clearance points Ferrari Driving Experience.

4. While stationary, locate and test primary controls: paddles, drive-mode selector, parking sensor toggle and camera activation. 5. If you plan any spirited work, consider booking a single-session official course or a dealer-led introduction to practice in a supervised environment.

6. Quick safety check: confirm fuel level, tyre pressures, that parking sensors and cameras function, and verify local traffic limits for where you plan to practise. Carrying a spotter for early parking runs is a small but very effective precaution.

First practical exercises: paddles, parking and slow-speed control

Start paddle practice with the engine off to simulate gear changes and hand positions. That lets you learn the feel of the paddles without the stress of moving the car; note how each paddle maps to upshift and downshift so you build muscle memory. A short video demo shows typical paddle use video demo.

Once comfortable, move to a quiet parking lot and practise short runs using minimal throttle to change gear with the paddles. Keep revs low, steer smoothly, and perform only small throttle inputs to get a feel for the transmission’s response at low speed Car and Driver first-drive review.

Two parking drills that help spatial awareness are: (1) slow, repeated parallel parking attempts to learn overhang judgement and (2) angled approach exercises to practice front-lip clearance when entering ramps. In both drills keep speeds under walking pace and have a spotter if possible.

Ownership and operating costs to consider before driving

Running costs for Ferraris are higher than mainstream cars and include premium fuel, specialist tyres, and more frequent or specialised servicing. Those realities affect how often owners choose to drive and where they park, and they are a practical consideration before taking a first drive beyond a brief test loop What it costs to own a supercar.

Insurance and repair exposure are also important. Even minor parking damage or a curb scrape can lead to specialist repair work; that prospect encourages conservative low-speed driving and careful choice of parking locations. Before you drive, ask the dealer about typical service intervals and estimated consumable costs so you understand ongoing commitments.

Model-specific differences and rare manual exceptions

Drivability varies by model. Differences in electronic intervention levels, gearbox calibration and ride height can make one Ferrari easier for a novice to handle than another. Always inspect the model’s specific smart guide or dealer notes before a drive to understand those nuances Smart Guide - Ferrari Roma.

A very small number of modern Ferraris are offered with traditional manual gearboxes as special or limited models; these cars require clutch and rev-matching skills and should only be driven by someone comfortable with manual transmissions or under instructor supervision.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Typical novice errors include abrupt throttle inputs that cause lurches, underestimating front or rear overhangs, and relying solely on cameras without checking blind spots. Identifying these common pitfalls before you drive reduces both risk and embarrassment for a first-time owner Car and Driver first-drive review.

Quick corrective habits to form are: use softer right-foot inputs, do a walk-around to confirm clearance before tight manoeuvres, and practice slow reverses with a spotter for the first few sessions. These habits become automatic after limited repetition and dramatically lower the chance of minor damage.

Where to learn more: official courses and independent resources

Ferrari’s official Driving Experience programs and dealer-led introductions are primary options for structured learning; these sessions are designed to guide new drivers through staged exercises and to teach how on-board systems and drive modes affect behaviour Ferrari Driving Experience.

Complement official programs with recent professional first-drive reviews for model-level impressions and technical explainers on dual-clutch behaviour if you want deeper mechanical context. Combining hands-on instruction and practical reading gives a complete preparation path.

Practical scenarios: city, highway and track first drives

City first drives call for a slow, planned approach: pick quiet streets, avoid tight kerb-heavy parking at first, and practice short loops that include controlled stops. Use cameras and sensors as aids but confirm sightlines manually.

On the highway, expect strong stability and precise steering at speed, with electronic aids helping manage grip and traction; when merging or overtaking, smooth throttle application and an awareness of the car’s acceleration profile keep manoeuvres predictable MotorTrend first-drive collection.

Track-intro sessions should be progressive: follow an instructor, allow tyres and brakes to warm before pushing, and focus on building consistent lines and braking points rather than outright speed. Instructor guidance accelerates learning and keeps risk managed.

Summary and next steps for confident driving

Modern Ferraris are easier to operate in many technical respects because of automated transmissions and electronic aids, but they demand adapted technique for throttle and brake modulation, and extra care with low clearance and visibility. A calm, methodical preparation approach reduces the difficulty of a first drive Ferrari Driving Experience.
