By published 2023 base MSRP the McLaren GT was McLaren's entry-priced new model for that period.

Factory options and bespoke items often add tens of thousands to the GT's base price, changing real purchase cost.

Well-vetted used 2023 GT examples commonly offered a lower upfront route into McLaren ownership.

Quick answer: Is the 2023 McLaren GT the cheapest McLaren?

The short answer is yes by the common new-car base price metric: major press and manufacturer information placed the 2023 McLaren GT as McLaren's entry-priced model in that model-year window.

This conclusion hinges on base MSRP comparisons rather than typical equipped transaction prices or used-market bargains, because options and ownership costs change the affordability picture materially. Car and Driver

Headline takeaway

Viewed strictly by published base MSRP in 2023, the GT was the lowest-priced new McLaren in the contemporary lineup, but that does not automatically mean it is the cheapest choice to own or buy once options and running costs are included. Keep the distinction between base price, equipped purchase price, and ownership cost front of mind.

How we define cheapest for this article

When we use "cheapest" we compare three metrics: base MSRP as published by the manufacturer and press, the typical final purchase price with common options, and realistic used-market entry prices for well-documented examples. That separation helps a buyer decide which metric matters for their budget.

What is the 2023 McLaren GT? Definition, role, and who it suits

The McLaren GT is McLaren Automotive's grand tourer offering designed to combine performance with a more comfort-oriented cabin and luggage capacity than the brand's sports and Super/Ultimate Series models.

McLaren positions the GT toward buyers who want long-distance capability with supercar dynamics rather than a stripped-out track-focused experience; the car pairs a twin-turbo V8 architecture with tuning that favors refinement and usability over a purely race-derived setup, as described on the official model page. McLaren Automotive

That role affects price perception because grand tourers are engineered for long-distance comfort alongside performance, which influences choice of materials, chassis tuning, and standard equipment levels compared with lighter, more track-focused McLaren models.

Buyers who typically choose a GT prioritize usable luggage space, more forgiving ride settings, and a cabin suited for longer journeys rather than the minimalism of some Super Series cars.

Model purpose: grand tourer versus sports and supercars

The GT's place in the model ladder is deliberate: it trades some extreme track bias for touring comfort and usability, which also influences standard content and thus base pricing compared with other McLarens.

Key specs and intended buyer

Core GT attributes that matter to buyers include its emphasis on comfort-oriented tuning, a focus on livable ergonomics, and packaging that supports weekend travel as much as spirited driving on back roads.

Pricing in 2023: base MSRP, options, and why advertised prices differ from transaction prices

Published sources reported the 2023 McLaren GT's base MSRP in the low-to-mid $200k range, which positioned it as McLaren's entry new-car model in that timeframe. That base figure is the primary reason the GT is described as the entry point in the 2023 lineup. Car and Driver

Factory options, bespoke items, and popular equipment choices commonly add tens of thousands of dollars to McLaren base prices, meaning a typical buyer who specifies comfort, style, or performance upgrades will see the final invoice rise well above the advertised base MSRP. Reviews and first drives repeatedly highlight how factory packages shift the buying equation. MotorTrend

Because most buyers do not take a base car without options, comparing only base MSRPs can understate the real-world purchase price; realistic transaction prices are often driven by the most commonly selected option categories such as paint, interior trim, and desirable handling or comfort packs.

That gap between base and equipped pricing means an advertised base advantage can be small or negligible after common options are added, so buyers should model a likely equipment level before declaring a model the cheapest buy.

Published base price for 2023 GT

Published base pricing establishes a starting point for comparisons and places the GT below other contemporary McLaren models on that narrow metric; again, the base figure is only a starting point, not a final cost estimate. McLaren Automotive

Common expensive option categories and bespoke items

Frequent cost drivers include paint and finish choices, premium interior trim, selected wheel and brake upgrades, and any bespoke options from manufacturer personalization programs; these categories are repeatedly mentioned in expert reviews as the areas that add substantial cost. MotorTrend

How options typically affect final invoice

The combined effect of several common options turns a base-priced GT into a materially more expensive car for many buyers, so the cheapest base MSRP does not guarantee the cheapest purchased car for a typical equipped buyer.

Used-market reality: typical asking prices for 2023 GT examples and why they vary

In the used market between 2023 and 2026, many listed McLaren GT examples traded below new MSRP, with a frequent range of asking prices in the mid-to-high $100k band for certain model years and specifications, though values vary widely by mileage, year, and spec. Edmunds

Valuation guides also show a spread between dealer asking prices and private-sale values, and they emphasize that mileage, service history, and original options materially affect where a specific car will fall within that range. Kelley Blue Book

Key drivers that push a used GT up in price include low mileage, complete service records, desirable option sets, and regional collector interest; conversely, higher mileage, incomplete service history, or uncommon options that reduce appeal to broad buyers can push a listing below average asking levels.

Because used listings are snapshots, a buyer should treat any single listing as an offer to evaluate rather than a fixed market value, and should cross-check valuation guides and comparable listings before concluding a car is a bargain.

What listings showed in 2023-2026

Market listings provide the clearest short-term signal for attainable entry points: many examples showed depreciation from new, creating accessible used options for buyers who prioritize lower upfront cost over new-car purchase and warranty status. Edmunds

Factors that push a used GT up or down in price

Mileage, documented service history, accident and repair records, and the mix of factory options are the primary determinants of a particular used GT's price; these are the elements worth verifying before making an offer. Kelley Blue Book

Running costs and total ownership affordability

Ownership costs for specialized performance cars like the GT are materially higher than mainstream cars when you include scheduled service, specialty parts, and higher insurance premiums; those expenses should be part of any affordability calculation. Kelley Blue Book

Routine scheduled maintenance, required inspections at authorized service centers, and the occasional need for specialty components can add significantly to multi-year ownership costs compared with non-exotic cars, and these running costs sometimes outweigh small differences in purchase price.

Insurance for high-value performance vehicles is typically priced differently than for mainstream models due to replacement cost and repair complexity, so buyers should obtain insurance quotes early in the decision process to understand the full recurring cost of ownership. MotorTrend

Maintenance and scheduled service

McLaren service intervals and required maintenance items are specialized relative to mainstream brands, and buyers should budget for scheduled inspections and the potential for out-of-warranty repairs when comparing total ownership affordability. Kelley Blue Book

Insurance and specialized parts

Replacement parts and specialty components for exotic machines typically cost more, and repair labor at authorized shops is priced at a premium; factor these recurring and occasional expenses into a multi-year ownership plan rather than treating purchase price as the sole determinant of affordability.

How the GT compares with the Artura and other McLaren models on price and role

Published comparisons show the McLaren Artura and Super/Ultimate Series models carried higher base prices than the GT in 2023, which is a primary reason the GT was labeled the entry-priced new model in that timeframe. Car and Driver

The Artura sits above the GT in base MSRP and in terms of its hybridized architecture and technology focus, while Super and Ultimate Series cars occupy the upper reaches of the brand ladder with significantly higher starting prices and different buyer priorities. Car and Driver

Because model purpose, technology content, and intended use differ between the GT and models such as the Artura or Super Series cars, price comparisons should include the buyer's intended use, desired features, and tolerance for maintenance and operating cost differences.

Base price comparisons

Examining base MSRPs is useful for a quick rank-order among models, and in that narrow sense the GT sat below the Artura and higher-tier McLarens for the 2023 model-year window. McLaren Automotive

Positioning: GT versus Artura versus Super/Ultimate Series

Beyond base price, the cars are intended for different owners: the GT for comfortable, long-distance driving with performance capability, the Artura for buyers seeking a more technology-forward, hybrid performance experience, and the Super/Ultimate Series for focused performance and exclusivity.

Decision framework: how to judge whether the GT is the cheapest option for you

Step 1, decide which affordability metric matters: are you comparing raw base MSRP, realistic equipped purchase price, or total cost of ownership over a chosen time horizon? Your answer will lead to different choices.

Step 2, check used listings and valuation guides for current asking prices and typical depreciation patterns; market data helps determine whether a used GT or another McLaren presents a lower total cash requirement. Edmunds

Step 3, factor ownership costs and expected use: estimate multi-year maintenance, insurance, and potential repairs to compare the true cost of ownership between a new equipped GT, a used GT, and other McLaren models. Kelley Blue Book

Checklist: get a pre-purchase inspection, verify full service records, compare comparable-equipped listings, and obtain an insurance quote before committing to purchase; these actions reduce the risk of surprises and help turn a perceived bargain into a confirmed value.

Define your affordability metric

Different buyers prioritize different metrics; a collector focused on depreciation might prioritize used purchase price, while someone seeking warranty coverage might place higher value on a new-car purchase despite higher upfront cost.

Checklist: new vs used vs alternatives

Use an ordered checklist: compare base MSRP, construct an equipped build to estimate realistic new purchase price, compare that to current used listings, and then overlay ownership cost estimates to reach a decision aligned with your budget and use case.

Typical mistakes buyers make when comparing McLaren prices

A common mistake is overemphasizing base MSRP and ignoring the common option packages that are likely to be selected, which can significantly change the purchase price versus the advertised starting figure. MotorTrend

Another frequent error is treating used listings as apples-to-apples without verifying service history, past repairs, and actual equipment; differences in those items explain most price variance among similar model-year listings. Car and Driver

Buyers also sometimes underbudget for maintenance and insurance, assuming a lower purchase price implies cheaper ownership; for exotic marques that assumption often proves false over a multi-year horizon. Kelley Blue Book

Overemphasis on base MSRP

Base MSRP is necessary for initial rank-ordering, but it is incomplete without considering typical options and dealer fees that combine to produce the realized purchase price.

Ignoring running costs and inspection

Failing to obtain a pre-purchase inspection or to confirm a complete service history is a costly oversight when buying used exotics and often negates the apparent savings of a lower asking price.

Practical examples and buying scenarios

Scenario A: A buyer seeking the lowest upfront cost who is comfortable with private-sale transactions and a pre-purchase inspection may find a well-vetted used 2023 GT that represents the most affordable route into McLaren ownership, given used-listing evidence and valuation guides. Edmunds

Scenario B: A buyer who prioritizes low running costs and warranty coverage may prefer a newer or certified example even if the upfront cost is higher, because predictable service plans and warranty protection can make total ownership cheaper over time for some buyers. Kelley Blue Book

For private or dealer-purchased used GTs follow a short checklist: verify VIN and history, request full service records, obtain a professional inspection, and compare the equipped features to similar listings to ensure the asking price aligns with market reality. Edmunds

Comparing a new GT with heavy options to a used GT with a similar equipment level often shows that the used route provides lower immediate cash outlay and, depending on condition, comparable driving experience when properly inspected and maintained.

Scenario A: Buyer wanting lowest upfront cost

For a buyer focused on entry price alone, a properly inspected used 2023 GT commonly presents the most direct low-cash route into McLaren ownership, subject to regional availability and vehicle condition. Edmunds

Scenario B: Buyer prioritizing low running costs

If predictable running costs are critical, prioritize cars with known service records, lower mileage, and available warranty coverage; these factors can reduce long-term surprises and make total cost more manageable. Kelley Blue Book
