In the hypercar world, pushing boundaries is not just a goal—it’s an expectation. Among the pioneers aiming to reimagine what’s possible is the Devel Sixteen.

Born from Dubai’s passion for innovation and excess, this audacious creation challenges the boundaries of engineering and physics. With its creators claiming a top speed of 350 mph, the Sixteen sets its sights on the impossible, aiming to surpass the achievements of automotive titans like Bugatti, Koenigsegg, and Hennessey.

Origins of an Ambitious Dream

The Devel Sixteen’s journey traces back to 2006, during an era marked by the Bugatti Veyron's dominance in the hypercar world. Inspired by the Veyron's unprecedented power and engineering, Devel Motors envisioned a vehicle that would not just compete, but surpass all existing benchmarks.

By 2008, research and development were in full swing. It wasn’t until 2013, however, that the dream began to take shape with the debut of a raw prototype at the Dubai International Motor Show. This bold introduction set the stage for what would become one of the most talked-about hypercars in history.

Though the early prototype faced criticism for its extreme design and speculative claims, it succeeded in capturing the world's attention. For Devel Motors, the skepticism served as a catalyst, driving relentless innovation and collaboration. Devel Motors demonstrated resilience through continuously refining the concept over the years with input from top-tier engineers and manufacturers.

At the heart of the Devel Sixteen lies a staggering quad-turbocharged V16 engine, developed in partnership with Michigan-based Steve Morris Engines. This powertrain, designed to deliver an earth-shattering 5,007 horsepower in its track-only variant, was unheard of. The engine’s architecture—16 cylinders, 12.3 liters of displacement, and four individual heads for improved reliability— places the Devel Sixteen in a league of its own, rivaling jet-powered land vehicles.

Devel claims the Sixteen can reach a top speed of 350 mph and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.8 seconds. While skeptics question these figures, the engineering effort behind the car is undeniable. Steve Morris designed the engine with four separate cylinder heads to improve reliability and simplify maintenance, enabling the Devel Sixteen to achieve its formidable performance goals.

The Devel is in the Details

The Devel Sixteen’s specifications are as extraordinary as its vision:

  • Engine: Quad-turbocharged V16

  • Torque: 3,757 lb-ft (track version)

  • Acceleration: 0–60 mph in 1.8 seconds (claimed)

  • Top Speed: 350 mph (claimed)

  • Price: $1.6 million (base model), up to $2 million for the top-spec version

The Sixteen is offered in three configurations tailored to varying needs:

Base Model: A 1,500 hp V8 designed for street usability and precision.

Mid-Tier Variant: A 3,006 hp V16 for those who demand raw power on the road.

Track-Only Beast: The 5,007 hp quad-turbo V16, built for the drag strip and capable of pushing the boundaries of speed.

A Design Beyond Convention

The Devel Sixteen’s design is as radical as its performance aspirations, embodying the ethos of pushing boundaries at every turn. Its aggressive, futuristic silhouette immediately sets it apart from anything else on the road or track. Every curve and angle of the Sixteen serves a purpose, blending aerodynamic functionality with a visually arresting aesthetic.

The front fascia is dominated by sharp, angular lines and gaping intakes designed to channel air efficiently to the engine and brakes, minimizing drag while maximizing cooling. Its low-slung profile hugs the ground, with a wide stance that exudes both stability and raw power. The elongated engine bay houses the monstrous V16 powerplant, and the flowing bodywork sweeps back into oversized exhaust ports that hint at the extraordinary performance within.

The Sixteen’s rear design is equally striking, featuring an integrated spoiler and sculpted diffusers that enhance downforce at high speeds. Despite its futuristic appeal, the design nods to classic hypercar principles, with a focus on reducing drag while maintaining stability at extreme velocities.

Collaborations with leading designers, including Italy's Manifattura Automobili Torino, have elevated the Sixteen’s visual language.

Overcoming the 300+ Speed Barrier

While the Devel Sixteen’s claims are extraordinary, achieving them involves overcoming significant engineering challenges. Chief among these is the ability to manage heat generated by its massive engine. Cooling systems must balance airflow and aerodynamics—a conundrum that hypercar manufacturers continually wrestle with.

Another limiting factor that had to be considered was tires. At speeds exceeding 300 mph, the rotational forces on tires are immense, causing traditional rubber compounds to warp or disintegrate. Devel Motors had to develop tires capable of withstanding these forces while maintaining grip and stability.

Cooling is another critical hurdle. The Sixteen’s engine generates extraordinary heat, requiring a sophisticated airflow system to maintain performance. However, every additional intake or vent increases drag, necessitating a delicate balance between cooling and aerodynamic efficiency.

Additionally, drag at such high speeds requires tremendous power to overcome. According to Devel’s engineers, transitioning from 310 mph to 350 mph demands a 60% increase in power due to exponential air resistance.

The Home Stretch

From its initial concept in 2013 to releasing its first production model by May 2022, Devel Motors has pushed through significant challenges to create a hypercar that dares to redefine automotive boundaries. By July 2022, the retail first unit had already reached a collector in Japan.

Through collaborations with industry leaders like Manifattura Automobili Torino and Steve Morris Engines, Devel Motors is steadfast in refining the Sixteen and validating its extraordinary performance claims. Whether or not it conquers the elusive 300+ mph threshold, the Devel Sixteen continues its relentless mission to define a new class of hypercar.
